Can I use Urestone panels to cover my chimney?
Yes. URESTONE faux stone, faux brick, and faux wood panels can be used to clad most chimney chases and exterior or interior chimney surrounds when installed on a flat, stable substrate and when all clearances to combustibles, venting requirements, and local building codes are followed. The panels are made from high-density polyurethane, so they must not contact the flue, liner, or any surface that reaches elevated temperatures or has direct flame exposure.
Details
-
Where they work: exterior framed chimney chases, interior chase surrounds, and existing masonry chimneys when you provide a flat substrate such as exterior sheathing, cement board, or furring over masonry
-
Where they do not go: never on the metal flue pipe, chimney cap, crown, inside the firebox, or any surface defined as non-combustible by code or the appliance manufacturer
-
Clearances: follow the fireplace, insert, stove, or chimney system manual for clearances to combustibles and respect all local building and fire codes
-
Heat zones: within any manufacturer-defined hot zone, use Class A fire-rated panels or a non-combustible material as required. Class A increases fire and heat resistance but is not fireproof
-
Weather resistance: panels have a durable, weather-resistant finish suitable for exterior use when properly sealed at penetrations and terminations
-
Substrates: install over wood framing with sheathing, cement board, masonry with furring, or other approved vertical surfaces that are flat, clean, dry, and structurally sound
-
Fastening: use construction adhesive plus corrosion-resistant screws. Maintain recommended screw spacing and follow expansion gap guidance
-
Flashing and moisture: integrate with proper step flashing, counterflashing, kick-out flashing, and sealants where the chimney meets the roof or wall cladding
-
Style continuity: large 4x8 panels reduce seams for tall chimney runs. Use keyless corners, narrow corners, end caps, and color-matched touch-up for a seamless stacked stone or brick look
-
Maintenance: inspect sealant, flashing, and panels periodically, especially after severe weather
