Can I use your panels around a fireplace, insert, or stove?

Yes. URESTONE faux stone, faux brick, and faux wood panels can be installed around most fireplaces, gas or electric inserts, and wood or pellet stoves when you follow the appliance manufacturer’s required clearances to combustibles and your local building codes. URESTONE panels are made from high-density polyurethane, which is a combustible material, so they must never be exposed to direct flame. If you require Class B or Class A fire-retardant panels for your project, please contact our team at (314) 524-2040 or email sales@repunlimited.com for additional assistance.

Details and best practices

  • Material clarity: the panels are polyurethane, not real stone. Treat them as a combustible trim material and always follow the appliance manual for “clearances to combustibles.”

  • Open hearths with a live flame (wood or coal): use a non-combustible border of at least 6 inches around the firebox opening before starting any panel. In the zone immediately surrounding the opening, use Class A fire-rated panels.

  • Gas or electric inserts: maintain the insert manufacturer’s listed clearances to combustibles. If an elevated heat zone is specified around the face, use Class A fire-rated panels in that area.

  • Wood or pellet stoves: respect side, rear, and top clearances, as well as floor and wall shield requirements. Use a non-combustible backer or heat shield where required by the stove manual and local code.

  • What Class A means: Class A fire-rated panels are more fire and heat retardant than standard panels, but they are not fireproof. Do not place panels inside the firebox, flue, or in any location with direct flame, embers, or sustained high radiant heat.

  • Adhesives and sealants: use the adhesives specified in our installation guides and avoid placing any adhesive or caulk where it will be exposed to excessive heat.

  • Surfaces and finishes: panels install over common substrates such as drywall, masonry, and metal surrounds when those substrates are permitted by the appliance manufacturer.

  • Code and inspection: always meet local building and fire codes. Where required, obtain permits and schedule inspections.

  • Standard panels outside the hot zone: beyond the manufacturer-defined clearance areas, standard URESTONE panels may be used like other decorative wall panels or sheetrock.

  • Typical applications: fireplace surrounds, mantels, chimney chase accents, wainscot, and full-height feature walls that are outside the listed clearance area.

Quick do and do not

  • Do maintain all listed clearances to combustibles from the appliance manual.

  • Do use a minimum 6 inch non-combustible border for open hearths and Class A fire-rated panels in the immediate surround.

  • Do not install panels inside a firebox, over a flue, or in direct contact with live flame or embers.

  • Do verify local code requirements and any special shielding or backer needs for stoves.
